The short answer

Start with a chord progression that feels good at a simple piano sound, then develop the bass, drum pocket and melody around it. R&B and hip-hop cover many approaches, so choose a clear musical direction instead of trying to demonstrate the whole genre in one loop.

Write the harmony before adding decoration

Try Dm7–G7–Cmaj7–Am7 as an original exercise. Play D–F–A–C, G–B–D–F, C–E–G–B and A–C–E–G. Use one chord per bar initially. Captain Chords can help you sketch and edit the progression, but listen to every change rather than assuming an extended chord automatically makes the part more musical.

Move the upper voices smoothly

Keep common notes where they make sense and move the other notes by small distances. Let the bass state the roots separately. This can make the progression feel connected without a dense chord in the low register. If the top voice forms a strong melody of its own, decide whether it supports or competes with the eventual vocal.

Choose a rhythmic pocket

Program a simple backbeat and a restrained hat pattern, then adjust the chord attacks around that groove. Some chords can arrive slightly before a beat while others leave a gap. Use timing changes deliberately rather than randomizing every event. Listen to the relationship between the kick, bass and chord attack as one rhythmic unit.

Write a bass part that follows the phrase

Begin with roots, then add a short approach note where the next chord needs momentum. Captain Deep can help develop a bass part alongside the chord progression. Check its note lengths against the drums and sustained harmony. A bass line does not need to repeat every chord attack to make the harmony clear.

Leave space for the lead melody

Hum a line over the accompaniment before adding another instrumental hook. Keep a few chord tones as stable targets and use passing notes to connect them. If the chord part is already busy, simplify it under the lead. A strong accompaniment often becomes more useful when it stops playing at selected moments.

Arrange a verse and hook from the same material

Use a lighter voicing or shorter chord phrase for the verse, then add one supporting layer at the hook. Change the drum density or bass length only where it improves the transition. Compare the sections with a guide vocal so the fuller version still gives the main performance a clear place.

Try this in your project

Create eight bars using Dm7–G7–Cmaj7–Am7. Add root-note bass and a simple drum groove, then record a hummed lead. Make a second chord rhythm with fewer attacks and compare which version leaves the clearest space for the lead.

Common questions

Do R&B chords always need sevenths or ninths?

No. Extensions are options, not requirements. A simple triad with good voicing, rhythm and performance can be effective.

Is a piano progression enough to demonstrate the finished groove?

It explains the harmony, but the full example should include bass, drums and phrasing to show the production approach.
